What is The Monitor?

The Monitor is a biweekly newsletter produced by the U.S.-China Perception Monitor, a publication by The Carter Center’s China Focus initiative.

We are dedicated to promoting peaceful cooperation and mutual understanding between the United States and China. We believe this requires providing a platform for constructive proposals for cooperation as well as sober criticism of the international records of both countries throughout the world.

China Focus organizes international conferences with politicians, academics, and policy professionals; hosts public webinars on issues central to the U.S.-China relationship; sponsors events for young and early career professionals; and conducts research into Chinese public opinion with university and non-governmental organization partners.

Our research and programming have been cited in The Guardian, Bloomberg, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Atlantic, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The Diplomat, The China Project, and more.

Our website, the U.S.-China Perception Monitor, features original articles on the United States and China in the world, interviews with scholars on topics ranging from U.S.-China geopolitics to Chinese cinema, and translations with commentary on influential voices within China.

Who are you?

For the most part, The Monitor is edited by Nick Zeller. Nick joined China Focus in 2024 after holding visiting assistant professor positions in the history departments of the University of South Carolina and Kennesaw State University. Nick is also an associate member of the China Research Center and occasional podcast host for the China Studies channel of the New Books Network. He earned a Ph.D. in modern Chinese history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

This wouldn’t work, however, without regular contributions from Miranda Wilson and Juan Zhang. Miranda is a contributing editor at the U.S.-China Perception Monitor and chief editor of the Emory Journal of Asian Studies.

Juan is the managing editor of the Chinese language edition of the U.S.-China Perception Monitor (中美印象) and senior writer for our English website. She has previously written for Dunjiaodu and People’s Daily. She was a special advisor for the George W. H. Bush Foundation for U.S.-China Relations and consultant in international development at the United Nations Development Programme. She holds master’s degrees in international relations from Peking University and New York University.
